Effects of Logotherapeutic Autobiography Program for Wives of Alcoholics

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study aimed to develop a ‘Logotherapeutic Autobiography Program(LAP)’ for alcoholics’ wives and to identify the effects on traumatic stress and codependency.
Methods: LAP was a program which was included logotherapy and autobiography. It was developed through four steps: literature review, pilot program development, pilot study, and detailed program structuring. The session was divided into four stages: warming up, writing an autobiography, finding the meaning in life, and closing. A quasi-experimental trial with a nonequivalent control group was conducted on 19 patients in the experimental group and 21 in the control group who were alcoholics’ wives. Data collection was conducted for four months from November 2006 to March 2007.
Results: The experimental group reported a significantly lower score in traumatic stress(p=.038) and codependency(p=.032).
Conclusion: This study suggests that LAP is very beneficial and applicable and might contribute to the enhancement of mental health in families and communities that suffer from trauma and meaninglessness.
